When may a physician report be required for a passenger with a medical condition, and how should medical approval and escort needs be planned?
- The airline may request a physician report where medical clearance is required.
- Turkish Airlines states that a required report should be issued no more than 10 days before the flight.
- Cabin class alone does not determine escort need; clinical and operational factors are considered together.
1. Planning Framework
The first planning question for a passenger with a medical condition is whether the person can complete standard cabin travel independently and whether flight conditions could adversely affect the condition. Turkish Airlines notes that passengers requiring medical clearance may be asked for a physician report. Recent procedures, respiratory support, medical-device use, mobility and special assistance should therefore be reviewed before ticketing.
2. Operational Detail
Turkish Airlines’ current guidance states that, when a medical report is required, it should be in Turkish or English and issued no more than 10 days before the flight. It should include wording confirming that there is no medical objection to air travel, together with the physician’s name, title, diploma number, signature/e-signature and date of issue.
3. Coordination Point
Being able to travel seated in Economy or Business Class does not by itself rule out a need for medical escort. Mobility, consciousness, oxygen demand, medication administration, pain control, transfer distance and connection time can change the operating plan. MEDIF, Fit-to-Fly, clinical reports and additional carrier information should be managed within one case file when required.
4. Important Limitation
Final carriage, special assistance and medical-device acceptance remain subject to the airline’s current review. STAR’s role is to organise the clinical-information workflow and coordinate ground ambulance, airport, ticketing, medical staff and destination handover; this article is not individual medical advice.
Airline-procedure information in this article is based on Turkish Airlines’ Sick and Disabled Passengers page. Carrier rules can change and are re-checked before each operation.
