Turkish Airlines Disabled Passenger Assistance: Wheelchair, Companion and Airport Planning

How Turkish Airlines addresses wheelchair requests, advance notice, airport arrival time and companion planning for passengers with reduced mobility.

How Turkish Airlines addresses wheelchair requests, advance notice, airport arrival time and companion planning for passengers with reduced mobility.

Key Takeaways
  • Wheelchair assistance should preferably be requested and confirmed at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Turkish Airlines recommends arrival at least two hours before domestic and three hours before international flights for sick or disabled passengers.
  • Companion requirements depend on the passenger’s ability to manage personal needs and safety instructions independently.

1. Planning Framework

Turkish Airlines states that wheelchair assistance is available for passengers who need it and that the request should preferably be made and confirmed in the reservation at least 48 hours before scheduled departure. Later requests may be handled subject to availability, but assistance cannot necessarily be guaranteed. Mobility assistance should therefore be defined early in the travel plan.

2. Operational Detail

To allow time for baggage, wheelchair and security procedures, Turkish Airlines recommends that sick or disabled passengers arrive at the terminal at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. Airport size, gate distance, transfer vehicles and connection time can add further operational time.

3. Coordination Point

A passenger with reduced mobility may travel independently when able to meet personal needs and understand and act on safety instructions. A companion may be required when those needs cannot be met independently or when appropriate response to emergency instructions cannot be expected. A travel companion and a medical escort are not the same requirement and should be assessed separately.

4. Important Limitation

Battery-powered wheelchairs or mobility devices also bring baggage and dangerous-goods considerations. Coordinating the assistance request, device information, medical documents where applicable, airport support and ground transfer within one file makes the journey more predictable. Final service conditions remain subject to the carrier’s current procedures.
